Fumba Beach Lodge is a real alternative to the more crowded East Coast. Covering over 40 acres of land that’s protected by the WWF due to the area's outstanding natural beauty, the losge has an impressive two kilometre stretch of private beach with three private sandy coves.

Fumba Beach lodge is the only property to be set in the Menai Bay Conservation Area which was set up in 1998. The project was designed to teach villagers the importance of protecting their natural heritage and show how Eco-tourism could bring in much needed money without damaging the environment. The popular ‘Safari Blue’ departs from here and is a gateway to the wide variety of dive and snorkel sites located nearby.

Exposed wooden beams inside and traditional thatched Makuti roofs above form the structure of the buildings, whitewashed and generously spaced throughout the gardens and beach front. The bright patchwork colour block bedspreads and scatter cushions add a fun and engaging blast of colour. All rooms and suites feature king size beds, ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms and ocean views. Large wooden doors open the rooms to the outside terrace and ocean beyond.

Fumba prides itself on delivering outstanding meals using the best ingredients and local flavours including lemongrass, ginger, garlic, cauliflower, courgettes, aubergines and carrots, and sun ripened succulent tomatoes. The lodge has its own herb and vegetable garden to guarantee freshness and the local area is home to the island’s most fertile soil providing sweet mangos, bananas, coconuts, jackfruits, passion fruit, and oranges.

Fresh seafood including succulent tunas, snappers, barracuda’s lobsters, prawns, and crabs are caught by the local fishermen and delivered on a daily basis and the focus of the menus are on elegant flavours with unpretentious presentation.

There are a couple of different locations at the lodge to enjoy a private and romantic meal away from the main restaurant.

In the Dhow FumBar is fashioned from an old dhow boat and overlooks the Indian Ocean and the infinity pool for those spectacular views and mesmerising sunsets. As the sun goes down you can even say hello to the resident bush babies that live in the nearby baobab tree.

A welcome addition to the lodge is the spa and massage therapy centre which offers a wide range of beauty treatments and a range of massages including Swedish, therapeutic, aromatherapy and Zanzibari scrubs. Treatments are designed for men and women and use natural ingredients produced locally. Made from coral and located under a magnificent Baobab tree, the spa has changing facilities and treatment spaces for couples and individuals alike.

The diving team includes a qualified and insured PADI Master Scuba Diver Instructor and Dive master. Fumba Beach Lodge

Our opinion

Fumba Beach Lodge is an excellent property that offers authentic accommodation and lots of activities in a great location away from the crowds. We would recommend upgrading to a suite if available as they are more secluded and have direct access to the beach. The food and service here is excellent and the lodge has a very natural and rustic feel to it. If you can cope without air conditioning, the lodge has everything you might need for a relaxing and fun filled stay.
