Each room is cool, white and constructed to the traditional design of a Swahili house, which is dependant upon the length of the mangrove poles that make up its ceilings. Adorned with arched niches, antique plates and brass lamps and featuring traditionally carved furniture, cool-ceramics, intricate fretwork, draped beds and louver doors giving onto wrought-iron balconies overlooking the Persian-bath pool and azure bay beyond, each room reflects a blend of essential Zanzibar and world-class elegance.

Environment and local community

Taking the Eco Route
The Serena Group is committed to an escalating eco-policy that embraces sensitivity to the interests of the local population in relation to such matters as: cultural preservation, sustainable habitat and community development. The group also abides by a code of responsible practice in relation to: energy conservation, waste recycling, sewage disposal, air emissions, pesticides, noise reduction and visual pollution. Finally, all Serena Group properties are built to harmonise with the local landscape and to utilise eco-friendly materials, local handicrafts and products. Wherever possible we also aim to enhance the environment via landscaping and indigenous plant material reinforcement.

The Zanzibar Eco Programme
Despite the beauty and historical value of Stone Town’s architecture, many of its buildings had been allowed to fall into grave disrepair until, in 1982, the United Nations Habitat Fund developed the Stone Town Conservation and Development Authority to preserve and restore the old town. As a part of this plan the Tanzanian government sold off selected Stone Town properties for redevelopment and channelled the funds accrued into an architectural restoration fund. The initiative, which has received substantial support from the both the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the European Union, has proved exceptionally successful and to date some 600 buildings have been restored, two of which are the Extelcoms Building (late 19th century colonial) and the Chinese Doctor's House (an old Arab building thought to pre-date Stone Town) both of which had fallen into disrepair following the Zanzibar revolution and were on the brink of collapse. These two buildings, painstakingly restored in authentic style by the Serena Group, comprise the Zanzibar Inn.

The Group also restored the square in front of the Inn, providing traditional baraza (stone benches) where residents can relax and exchange gossip in time-honoured Swahili style. In addition the Zanzibar Inn employs local musicians, singers, performers, artists and artisans, stages traditional Swahili evenings, employs primarily local staff, purchases the majority of its fresh food stuff locally and markets a range of local handicrafts and fashions in its Boutique.

Our opinion

The Zanzibar Serena is the epitome of elegant romance and sophistication. It has a good size swimming pool which is welcome in Stone Town with accommodation and service of an excellent standard.
