Overview

Located in the bustling heart of Stone Town the building was originally set up and used as an Indian Merchant House in the 19th century. In the 125 years that were to come the building was home to one of the many Sultan families and then became a hotel some years ago.

The Swahili House is located in the centre of Stone Town and therefore in the middle of all the action! The bustling market, shops, restaurants and other points of interest such as the House of Wonders are all within walking distance from the hotel.

Accommodation

The Swahili House has 5 floors that are all built around a beautiful court yard – an ideal spot to enjoy a quiet moment away from busy Stone Town life. The floors are all accessible via traditional Zanzibari Staircases and an elevator. The 22 rooms are spread out over 4 floors and can be divided in 3 different room categories:
  • Sultan Suites – large, spacious rooms with balcony. Approx. 45m2.
  • Suites: medium sized spacious rooms with or without balcony. Approx. 33m2.
  • Deluxe Rooms: standard sized double or twin room. Approx. 21m2.

All the rooms all are restored and decorated in traditional Swahili style, but adjusted to Western standards, which for example includes European sized mattresses, air conditioning and a fan. Most rooms feature a spectacular open bathroom including a shower and bath, which are ideally to relax after a busy day exploring Stone Town and its many treasures.

Facilities

The Swahili House would definitely not be the same without the rooftop terrace. The rooftop terrace houses the bar, restaurant and a very relaxing Jacuzzi overlooking the Indian Ocean. Enjoy a cocktail, lunch or dinner while indulging in stunning views of Stone Town and the Swahili Coastal area!

The á la carte menu is a combination of Eastern and Western influences, Spices and flavours and includes a wide variety of freshly caught Fish and Seafood, Mediterranean Tapas and is changed on a daily basis. A Continental and full English breakfast buffet will be served from the rooftop kitchen every morning.

And last but certainly not least: The Swahili House offers a large variety of wines, international spirits and delicious cocktails to enjoy a romantic sun set with!

Our opinion

We expect the Swahili House will do very well as it has all the right ingredients. The owners are experienced hoteliers with a handful of other properties within Tanzania and know exactly how to blend the traditional with the new.

The Swahili House is a welcome addition to Stone Town and although currently there is little guest feedback we expect only positive things.

Further to the above, The Swahili house has now been open for just over a year and is fast becoming a firm favourite for Stone Town. We were particularly impressed with the rooftop restaurant (Oct 09) and would recommend stopping by for a meal and taking in the view even if you’re not staying within the hotel.

Please note: This property has steep staircases and is not suitable for those who would find them difficult.
